The Institute of Hotel Management Catering Technology & Applied Nutrition, Guwahati is an autonomous body under Ministry of Tourism, Govt. of India. It is affiliated to National Council for Hotel Management & Catering Technology, Noida under Ministry of Tourism, Govt. of India which centrally regulates academics for hospitality and hotel administration and other structured courses of study under its Institutes. The IHM, Guwahati is one of 21 central Institutes of Hotel Management, which are spreaded up all over India. The Institute is designed to train promising men and women in hotel management, general food management and catering technology and in specific field such as cookery, bakery, reception, waiters, book-keeping, house-keeping and allied topic, depending on the branch of the industry which the time desires to take up. The practical presentation and emphasis on nutritional ideas will be the significant of the technical given to the students.
The training to be imparted at the institute will fully equip the trainee to take up a position of responsibility in the various branches of the industry in the level of Supervisors, Junior Manager, promising Management & Departmental trainee and skilled craftsman in hotels, restaurants, airline & other mobile catering & Industrial catering and also in teaching positions in different institutions. There are in this country, a number of luxury hotels and many medium catering establishments, snack bars, restaurants, ice cream bars, coffee bars and other forms of institutional catering and feeding. With urbanization and industrialization, catering establishments are increasing in large numbers. The development of adequate services for feeding the large and increasing number of workers engaged in industrial production pose a special challenge of considerable importance. Apart from these, there is urgent need to provide better and nutritive meals on a large scale in Hospitals, Catering Establishment attached to Railways, Shipping Lines, Government Offices & Undertakings, Rest Houses, Dak Bunglows etc. Further, there are new projects such as the Mid-day School meals programme that are being launched. Large number of trained men and women are necessary to meet the high standard to be maintained in all such feeding programmes and in the hotel industry.
Since the inception of this Institute as Food Craft Institute in 1984 and upgraded to IHM, level in 1995 has produced competent men and women specially trained in their professional skills holding key position in hospitality industry all over India and abroad Hope this pioneer Institute of North East can abridge the professional and technical needs of ever growing global hospitality industry of North East and India.
